Michael Phelps won five gold medals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. He won the 4×100-metre freestyle relay, 200-metre butterfly, 4×200-metre freestyle relay, 200-metre individual medley, and 4×100-metre medley relay.

Phelps’s Rio total was lower than his eight gold medals at Beijing 2008, but it was still remarkable because he was 31 years old and had returned to competition after a brief retirement. His final Olympic race was the 4×100-metre medley relay, where he swam butterfly for the United States and won his 23rd gold.
A common mix-up is counting his total Rio medals rather than his golds: he won six medals overall, five gold and one silver.
