Cristiano Ronaldo scored four goals for Portugal at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He scored three of them in Portugal’s opening match, a dramatic 3–3 draw with Spain in Sochi.
Ronaldo opened the scoring with a penalty, added a second goal before half-time and completed his hat-trick with a late free kick. It was one of the tournament’s most memorable individual performances. He then scored Portugal’s only goal in a 1–0 victory over Morocco, taking his tournament total to four.
Those four goals came in the group stage. Portugal later drew 1–1 with Iran, with Ronaldo missing a penalty, before losing 2–1 to Uruguay in the round of 16. He therefore finished the tournament with four goals, despite not scoring in Portugal’s final two matches.
The number is sometimes confused with his total World Cup record. Across five World Cup tournaments from 2006 through 2022, Ronaldo scored eight goals, while his 2018 total alone was four.
