The Jeep Wrangler had four generations as of 2024: YJ, TJ, JK, and JL.
The first-generation YJ replaced the Jeep CJ line and was produced from 1986 through 1995. The second-generation TJ followed for the 1997–2006 model years, restoring the round headlights associated with earlier Jeeps and switching to coil-spring suspension.
The JK generation covered 2007–2018 and brought the four-door Wrangler Unlimited into the mainstream lineup. The JL, introduced for 2018, remained the current generation in 2024 and added modern powertrains, updated safety technology, and the plug-in-hybrid 4xe variant.
A common mix-up is counting the CJ as a Wrangler generation. The CJ is the Wrangler’s predecessor, not one of its four generations. The 2024 refresh also did not create a fifth generation; it was a mid-cycle update to the JL.
