How many Formula One Constructors' Championships has Honda won as an engine supplier?

The story behind the answer

Honda has won six Formula One Constructors’ Championships as an engine supplier.

Those six titles came in a dominant stretch from 1986 through 1991. Williams-Honda won the championship in 1986 and 1987, while McLaren-Honda took four consecutive titles from 1988 to 1991. Honda supplied the engines rather than entering the championship-winning chassis as its own constructor.

Honda’s success began after returning to Formula One as an engine supplier in 1983. Its turbocharged V6 engines powered Williams to victories before the partnership expanded to McLaren. The 1988 McLaren-Honda season was especially notable: McLaren won 15 of 16 races, with Ayrton Senna taking the Drivers’ Championship and Alain Prost finishing second.

A common mix-up is counting later titles won by Red Bull using Honda-designed power units under RBPT or Honda RBPT branding. The conventional Honda total counts championships credited to Honda-badged engines: two with Williams and four with McLaren. Honda also has six Drivers’ Championships associated with its engines, but that is a separate tally.
