In 1958, the 17-year-old Pelé announced himself on the world stage, scoring six goals in four matches and netting twice in Brazil’s 5–2 final victory over Sweden. He also played in Brazil’s successful 1962 campaign, although injury limited his involvement after the opening match.
Pelé’s third title came in Mexico in 1970, when he played alongside stars such as Jairzinho, Gérson, Rivellino, and Carlos Alberto. Brazil defeated Italy 4–1 in the final. Brazil’s 1962 title is sometimes overlooked because Pelé missed much of that tournament, but he remained an official member of the winning squad.
