Diego Maradona played in four FIFA World Cup tournaments.
Maradona represented Argentina at the 1982, 1986, 1990, and 1994 World Cups. He appeared in 21 World Cup matches overall, scoring eight goals, and remains one of the tournament’s most influential players.
His finest campaign came in 1986 in Mexico. As Argentina’s captain and creative leader, he scored five goals, supplied several decisive assists, won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, and lifted the trophy after Argentina defeated West Germany in the final. Argentina reached the final again in 1990 but lost to West Germany.
Maradona’s fourth and final World Cup was the 1994 tournament in the United States. He scored against Greece but was removed from the competition after testing positive for ephedrine. He did not play in the 1978 tournament, when Argentina won at home, because he was still a teenager and was not selected.
