How many feathers are shown in the NBC peacock logo?

The story behind the answer

The NBC peacock logo shows six feathers.

Each feather is a different color in the familiar version: yellow, orange, red, purple, blue, and green. The peacock faces right, and its body is formed by a small white shape cut out beneath the fan. The six-color design was introduced in 1979 as part of NBC’s “Proud N” identity, replacing earlier forms of the network’s symbol.

The colors were especially meaningful when color television was becoming central to American broadcasting. The peacock suggested that NBC offered a vivid range of programming, while its fan shape remained recognizable even at small sizes.

NBC’s logo has changed several times since the network’s earliest abstract designs. The peacock was simplified in later revisions, but the six-feather arrangement remained the key visual feature. It is sometimes mistaken for a seven-feather fan because the white negative space can look like an additional segment.
