How many factors are included in the Buddhist Noble Eightfold Path?

The story behind the answer

The Buddhist Noble Eightfold Path includes eight factors.

The factors are right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. They are traditionally presented as the practical path leading toward the ending of suffering and form the fourth of the Four Noble Truths.

“Right” is also translated as “correct,” “complete,” or “skillful,” depending on context. The path is not usually understood as eight strictly separate steps that must be completed one at a time. Buddhist traditions often group its factors into wisdom, ethical conduct, and mental discipline. This teaching should not be confused with the Five Precepts, which are basic ethical commitments for lay Buddhists, or the threefold training, which is a broader classification.
