The PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs contain three events.
The modern playoff series consists of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship. Players qualify through the season-long FedExCup points standings, with the field shrinking after each event. In recent formats, 70 players start the first playoff event, 50 advance to the BMW Championship and 30 reach the Tour Championship.
The playoffs were introduced in 2007 to determine the FedExCup champion through a points-based postseason. The Tour Championship is the finale, and the leader entering that event has historically been given an advantage through starting-stroke adjustments under the current format. The series therefore combines regular-season performance with a short, high-pressure finish.
A common confusion comes from older versions of the system. The playoff field and points rules have changed several times, and earlier seasons used four playoff events. The current three-event structure is the intended answer for this question.
