Pixar originally considered 27 emotions for Inside Out.
The finished film centers on five personified emotions—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust—but the filmmakers initially explored a much larger group. Development discussions included concepts such as irritation, envy, greed, gloom, despair, love, shame, embarrassment, hope, and schadenfreude. The list was eventually reduced so the story would remain clear and manageable.
The number 27 describes an early development concept, not the number of emotions that appear at Riley’s Headquarters in the completed 2015 film. Pixar’s creative team consulted emotion research while deciding which characters best served Riley’s story. The final five were chosen because their competing goals created a focused emotional journey, especially Joy’s gradual realization that Sadness also plays an essential role.
Inside Out 2 later revisited the broader concept by introducing additional emotions, including Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Nostalgia.
