How many days did the Battle of Gettysburg last?
Answer
Three days
Answer
Three days
The Battle of Gettysburg lasted three days, from July 1 through July 3, 1863. It was fought in and around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, during the American Civil War.
The first day began when Confederate and Union forces encountered one another west of town. Fighting intensified as reinforcements arrived, and Union troops withdrew to stronger positions on Cemetery Hill and Cemetery Ridge. On July 2, Confederate forces attacked both ends of the Union line, producing fierce fighting at locations including Little Round Top, the Wheatfield, and Culp’s Hill.
The third day included fighting on Culp’s Hill, cavalry engagements, and Pickett’s Charge, the failed Confederate assault against the Union center. Lee’s army began retreating on July 4, but that date is not counted as a fourth battle day. Estimates place combined casualties at roughly 46,000 to 51,000, making Gettysburg one of the war’s bloodiest battles.
