Fourteen damas traditionally form the female part of a quinceañera’s court of honor.
In the classic arrangement, the court contains 14 young women called damas and 14 young men called chambelanes, creating 14 paired couples. The quinceañera stands separately as the fifteenth member of the ceremonial group, which helps explain why the number 15 is symbolically important.
The court may accompany the celebrant during an entrance, formal presentation, group photographs, and choreographed dances. Its members are often close relatives or friends, but families choose participants according to their own circumstances.
Modern celebrations frequently reduce the court, use an all-female or mixed group, or omit it entirely. Thus, 14 describes the traditional full arrangement rather than a requirement for every contemporary party.
