How many countries border Kuwait?

Kuwait borders 2 countries: Iraq and Saudi Arabia. It lies at the northwestern end of the Persian Gulf, with Iraq to the north and northwest and Saudi Arabia to the south and southwest.

Kuwait’s international boundaries reflect the political reshaping of the Arabian Peninsula after World War I. The Kuwait–Saudi border was formalized through the 1922 Uqair Protocol, which also created a Saudi-Kuwaiti Neutral Zone. That zone was later divided between the two countries, while its oil resources continued to be shared.

Kuwait’s northern border with Iraq has a particularly complicated history. Iraq recognized Kuwait’s borders in 1963, but disputes continued over territory and access to the Gulf. After Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, a United Nations commission demarcated the boundary in 1992; Iraq formally accepted the demarcation in 1994.

The Persian Gulf is a maritime boundary, not another country. That is why the answer remains two even though Kuwait has a long coastline and several islands, including Bubiyan and Warbah.
