How many Corvette generations have been produced as of 2024?

The story behind the answer

As of 2024, eight Corvette generations had been produced.

They are conventionally identified as C1 through C8. The first generation ran from 1953 to 1962, followed by the C2 from 1963 to 1967, the C3 from 1968 to 1982, and the C4 from 1984 to 1996. The C5 covered 1997–2004, the C6 2005–2013, the C7 2014–2019, and the C8 began with the 2020 model year.

The gap between 1982 and 1984 reflects the absence of a 1983 production Corvette. Chevrolet developed the fourth-generation car during that period, and the C4 introduced a major redesign rather than simply extending the C3.

The eighth generation is especially significant because it moved the Corvette’s engine behind the passenger compartment into a rear-mid-engine layout. That change ended the front-engine arrangement used by the first seven generations. The C8 debuted for 2020, making eight generations the correct count in 2024—not nine or ten.
