Released for the Game Boy and Game Boy Color, Pokémon Yellow was designed as an enhanced version of Pokémon Red and Blue. It followed the anime’s presentation more closely by giving the player Pikachu as a starting partner and allowing characters associated with the television series to appear in the adventure.

The North American release arrived during the Pokémon franchise’s enormous late-1990s boom. The game had roughly 150,000 pre-orders, and its standard cartridge sold more than 600,000 copies in its first week before reaching one million in ten days.

That performance made Pokémon Yellow the fastest-selling handheld game at the time. It is sometimes confused with the sales record of the original Red and Blue games, which achieved much larger combined lifetime sales worldwide. Pokémon Yellow’s rapid launch was also helped by the popularity of Pikachu and the release of Pokémon: The First Movie around the same period.
