How many copies did Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue ultimately sell in Japan?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue ultimately sold 10.23 million copies in Japan.

The total combines the original Japanese releases and their updated version. Pocket Monsters Red and Green launched in February 1996, while Blue first appeared as a special mail-order edition before receiving a wider Japanese retail release.

Outside Japan, the games were reorganized and released as Pokémon Red and Blue. The Japanese Green version was not released internationally in its original form; instead, the overseas editions used the Japanese Blue version’s updated code, artwork, and dialogue.

The games began slowly, but word of mouth, trading, the hidden Pokémon Mew, and related products helped create sustained demand. Their sales made the original games a defining commercial success for the Game Boy and laid the foundation for Pokémon’s expansion into animation, cards, films, and merchandise.
