How many Copa América titles has Lionel Messi won?

The story behind the answer

Lionel Messi has won two Copa América titles with Argentina: the 2021 tournament in Brazil and the 2024 tournament held in the United States. These were his first two senior Copa América triumphs.

The 2021 victory ended Argentina’s 28-year wait for a major senior men’s international trophy. Argentina defeated Brazil 1–0 in the final at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã Stadium, with Ángel Di María scoring the decisive goal. Messi was named the tournament’s best player.

Argentina defended the title in 2024 by beating Colombia 1–0 after extra time in the final at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Messi started the match but was substituted because of an injury; Lautaro Martínez scored the winning goal.

People sometimes count Argentina’s 2022 Finalissima or World Cup triumph when discussing Messi’s international titles, but neither is a Copa América. The 2015 and 2016 Copa América finals were defeats, and Argentina’s 1993 title came decades before Messi’s senior international career.
