The 1975–76 American Freedom Train visited all 48 contiguous U.S. states.
The train was a traveling exhibition created for the United States Bicentennial. It carried historical objects and Americana in specially designed cars and toured the country during a 21-month journey that began in Wilmington, Delaware, in April 1975.
The figure 48 refers to the states connected to the continental landmass, excluding Alaska and Hawaii. Those two states had joined the Union only in 1959 and were not part of the train’s overland route.
The American Freedom Train is sometimes confused with the earlier 1947–49 Freedom Train. Both traveled through the 48 contiguous states, but the later train specifically commemorated the Bicentennial and carried a different exhibition and itinerary.
