The original Street Fighter's single-player mode contains ten computer-controlled opponents.
The opponents are arranged as five countries with two fighters representing each one. Players begin by choosing an opening country from the game's available configuration, then fight through eight challengers across Japan, the United States, China, and England. After those matches, the route always ends in Thailand.
The final two opponents are Adon and Sagat. Adon serves as the penultimate challenge, while Sagat is the game's final boss. This ten-opponent structure is distinct from the playable roster: Ryu and Ken are the two playable fighters, while the ten opponents make up the computer-controlled campaign lineup.
The original game's format predates the larger character rosters and more elaborate arcade ladders of later Street Fighter titles. It also included bonus stages between portions of the tournament, giving players opportunities to earn extra points through activities such as breaking tables or bricks. Because later games often use different numbers of arcade opponents, players sometimes remember the total incorrectly.
