The United States Semiquincentennial Commission initially had 33 commissioners in 2018.
The original body consisted of 16 private citizens, eight members of Congress, and nine federal officials. Those categories totaled 33 members when the commissioners were sworn in and began organizing their work in November 2018.
The number later changed. Amendments to the commission’s governing law increased the number of nonvoting ex officio federal officials, bringing the body’s membership to 36. This is why references to the commission may show either 33 or 36, depending on whether they describe the original 2018 composition or the later structure.
The commission was designed to combine elected officials, private citizens, and federal representatives. That arrangement was intended to give the anniversary effort both congressional involvement and broader public and administrative expertise.
