How many cities did the American Freedom Train visit during its 1975–76 Bicentennial tour?

The story behind the answer

The American Freedom Train visited 138 cities during its 1975–76 Bicentennial tour.

The train operated as a traveling exhibition rather than simply as a passenger service. Its cars displayed American historical artifacts and cultural material while the train moved across the 48 contiguous states.

The journey began in Wilmington, Delaware, on April 1, 1975, and ended in Florida in late 1976. Over the course of 21 months, the exhibition traveled approximately 25,833 miles and welcomed more than seven million visitors.

The American Freedom Train is distinct from the Freedom Train that toured in 1947–49. Both were national traveling exhibitions, but the later train was created specifically to commemorate the United States Bicentennial, the immediate predecessor to America250.
