How many children were in Bruno Mars's family?

The story behind the answer

Bruno Mars was one of six children in his family.

Mars grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, in a large musical household. His mother, Bernadette San Pedro Bayot, was a singer and dancer, while his father, Peter Hernandez, performed music and played percussion. Their children were exposed to many styles, including rock and roll, reggae, hip-hop and rhythm and blues.

That family environment strongly shaped Mars’s career. He began performing with the family band, the Love Notes, when he was four years old and appeared regularly at venues in Waikiki. His relatives also encouraged his early impersonations of Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson.

The number six refers to the total number of children in the family, with Mars being one of them—not six siblings in addition to him. His brother Eric later became the drummer for the Hooligans, extending the family’s musical connection into Mars’s professional career.
