How many children does Stephen King have?

The story behind the answer

Stephen King has three children: Naomi Rachel King, Joe Hill, and Owen Phillip King.

King and his wife, Tabitha Spruce, married in 1971 after meeting at the University of Maine. Their children were born before King became one of the world’s most commercially successful novelists. Naomi is a minister, while Joe Hill and Owen King are both published writers, continuing the family’s literary tradition.

Joe Hill writes under a pen name derived from his full name, Joseph Hillström King. Owen King has also collaborated with his father: the two wrote the novel Sleeping Beauties, published in 2017. This family connection sometimes causes confusion in trivia questions, because “Joe Hill” may be mistaken for an unrelated author rather than King’s son.

King’s family life has also influenced his work indirectly. He has frequently drawn on childhood fears, family relationships, and small-town settings, although a novel’s characters should not automatically be treated as portraits of his children.
