How many children did Francis Crick have?

The story behind the answer

Francis Crick had three children.

His children were Michael Francis Compton, Gabrielle Anne, and Jacqueline Marie-Therese. Michael was born during Crick’s first marriage, while Gabrielle and Jacqueline were born during his second marriage to Odile Crick.

Crick’s family life spanned two marriages and his scientific career. He married Ruth Doreen Crick in 1940; after their divorce, he married Odile in 1949. His work on DNA became internationally famous after the 1953 Nature paper written with James Watson, but Crick later made major contributions to understanding the genetic code and to neuroscience.

The number is sometimes confused with the three scientists who shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine: Crick, Watson, and Maurice Wilkins. Those are separate “threes” in his biography. Crick died in 2004 in California, where he had spent his later career at the Salk Institute studying consciousness and the brain.
