How many children did Ernest Hemingway have?

Ernest Hemingway had three children: Jack, Patrick, and Gloria. All three were born during his first two marriages, and each had a connection to different periods of Hemingway’s life.

Jack, born in 1923, was Hemingway’s first child with his second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer. Known by the nickname “Bumby,” he later became a physician. Patrick, born in 1928, also became a writer and worked as a journalist. Gloria, born in 1931, was Hemingway’s youngest child with Pauline.

A common mix-up comes from Hemingway’s four marriages. The number of wives is four, but the number of children is three. His first wife, Hadley Richardson, and later wives Martha Gellhorn and Mary Welsh did not have children with him. Hemingway’s children therefore span only his marriage to Pauline Pfeiffer, although Jack was born during the period when Hemingway was closely associated with the Lost Generation in Paris.
