The American Freedom Train that toured for the U.S. Bicentennial consisted of 26 cars.
The train operated in 1975 and 1976 as a traveling exhibition celebrating the 200th anniversary of American independence. Its cars carried historical objects and cultural displays, bringing a large national museum-style experience to communities across the country.
Three restored steam locomotives powered the train in different regions: Reading Company No. 2101, Southern Pacific No. 4449, and Texas & Pacific No. 610. The locomotives were not included in the 26-car count.
The American Freedom Train traveled through all 48 contiguous states and attracted more than 7 million visitors. Its nationwide journey became one of the most recognizable Bicentennial projects and provides a historical precedent for large-scale America250 commemorations.
