The American Freedom Train that toured for the 1976 United States Bicentennial consisted of 26 cars.
The train was a traveling exhibition created to commemorate the nation’s 200th anniversary. Its cars carried historical objects and cultural artifacts, bringing a large museum-like display to communities across the country. The tour began in Wilmington, Delaware, on April 1, 1975, and continued through the end of 1976.
Three steam locomotives powered the train during different portions of its route: Reading Company No. 2101, Southern Pacific No. 4449, and Texas & Pacific No. 610. Diesel locomotives were also used on some sections because of track conditions and operating difficulties.
The American Freedom Train visited all 48 contiguous states and attracted more than seven million visitors. It is separate from the earlier 1947–1949 Freedom Train, which promoted American historical documents after World War II.
