The American Freedom Train consisted of 26 cars during the 1975–1976 Bicentennial.
The train was a traveling exhibition created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of American independence. Its cars carried historical artifacts and displays, turning the train itself into a moving museum. The tour began in Wilmington, Delaware, on April 1, 1975, and ended on December 31, 1976.
Three restored steam locomotives powered the train at different stages. Reading Company No. 2101 operated first, Southern Pacific No. 4449 handled much of the western route, and Texas & Pacific No. 610 pulled the train through Texas. Diesel locomotives were also used where track conditions or operating requirements made steam power impractical.
The train traveled through all 48 contiguous states and attracted more than 7 million visitors. It is sometimes confused with the earlier 1947–1949 Freedom Train, which also displayed national documents but was a separate project. The 1975–1976 American Freedom Train was specifically created for the Bicentennial.
