The 1975–76 American Freedom Train consisted of 26 cars.
The train was designed as a traveling museum for the United States Bicentennial. Its cars displayed American historical objects, cultural items, and national symbols while the train moved between communities across the country. The exhibition’s size allowed it to function as a long, mobile gallery rather than merely a ceremonial passenger train.
Three restored steam locomotives powered different portions of the route: Reading Company No. 2101, Southern Pacific No. 4449, and Texas & Pacific No. 610. Diesel locomotives were also used on some sections because of track conditions, derailment problems, or operational limitations.
The 26-car figure is distinct from the 48 states visited and the more than 7 million visitors recorded during the tour. Those numbers describe different aspects of the project: the train’s physical length, its geographic reach, and its public audience. America250’s nationwide scale similarly involves programs rather than a single traveling train.
