A Pokémon Trading Card Game deck normally contains 60 cards.
Players build decks from Pokémon cards, Energy cards and Trainer cards. During a game, Pokémon fight from the Active and Benched positions, while Energy cards help them use attacks. Trainer cards provide effects such as drawing cards, changing the battlefield or supporting a strategy.
The 60-card rule is part of the standard constructed format, but a deck cannot simply contain any 60 cards. Players must follow format rules, including limits on duplicate cards and requirements involving Basic Pokémon. Prize cards are set aside at the start of a game and are not part of the deck itself.
The tabletop game was first published in Japan in October 1996, the same year the original Game Boy games appeared. Wizards of the Coast initially published the English-language game in the United States before publishing responsibility moved to The Pokémon Company. The card game has since become a major competitive and collecting branch of Pokémon.
