A quinceañera’s traditional candle ceremony uses fifteen candles, with each candle commonly honoring an important person in the celebrant’s life.
The candles connect the ritual to the celebration’s central age. During the ceremony, the quinceañera may light candles herself or present them to family members and friends. The people recognized can include parents, grandparents, siblings, relatives, and close friends.
There is no single universal script for the candle ritual. Some families attach a short message, memory, or dedication to each candle, while others focus on the presentation itself. The order and number of recipients can therefore differ in contemporary celebrations.
The fifteen candles should not be confused with the formal court of honor or with the fifteen-year age milestone itself. They are a symbolic feature of some quinceañeras, not a required element of every celebration.
