No British women have won the Wimbledon singles title since 2000. In fact, the most recent British woman to win the championship is Virginia Wade, who defeated Betty Stöve in the 1977 final.
Wade won that final 4–6, 6–3, 6–1 during the tournament’s centenary year and in front of Queen Elizabeth II, who attended the match. Her victory was the third and final Grand Slam singles title of her career. She remains the only British woman to have won singles titles at all four major tournaments.
Since 2000, every Wimbledon women’s singles champion has represented another nation. The early years of that period were dominated by Venus and Serena Williams, while champions such as Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitová, Ashleigh Barty and Iga Świątek added further international variety.
The wording can cause confusion because British women have continued to reach deep stages of major tournaments. Emma Raducanu won the 2021 U.S. Open, becoming the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Wade, but she did not win Wimbledon.
