How many beef patties are in an In-N-Out Double-Double?

The story behind the answer

An In-N-Out Double-Double contains two beef patties.

The name “Double-Double” refers to the standard combination of two hamburger patties and two slices of cheese. It is one of In-N-Out Burger’s core menu items, alongside the regular hamburger and cheeseburger. The usual toppings include lettuce, tomato, onions by request, and the chain’s spread.

The burger is not the same as a four-patty 4×4. In In-N-Out’s naming system, a 3×3 has three patties and three slices of cheese, while a 4×4 has four of each. Those larger combinations belong to the chain’s custom or so-called secret-menu ordering tradition rather than the standard Double-Double.

Customers can also request variations such as Animal Style, which adds mustard while cooking and includes grilled onions, pickles, and extra spread. Protein Style replaces the bun with lettuce, but it does not change the number of patties.

The name can cause confusion because “double” appears twice, but each use signals a separate doubled component: the beef and the cheese. Thus, the canonical count of beef patties is two, not four or three.
