How many Australian Open titles did Roger Federer win?

The story behind the answer

Roger Federer won six Australian Open singles titles. His victories came in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2017, and 2018, making Melbourne one of the most successful venues of his career.

Federer won his first Australian Open in 2004 by defeating Marat Safin in the final. That title also helped him rise to world No. 1 for the first time. He defended the championship in 2006 and 2007, becoming the first man since Björn Borg to win a Grand Slam without dropping a set in 2007.

His fifth Australian Open title came in 2017, when he returned from a six-month injury absence and defeated Rafael Nadal in a five-set final. In 2018, Federer beat Marin Čilić to claim his sixth title and his 20th Grand Slam overall.

A common mix-up is confusing Federer's six Australian Open trophies with his eight Wimbledon titles or five US Open titles. Novak Djokovic later surpassed Federer’s Australian Open total.
