Nine Allied representatives signed after Douglas MacArthur at the 1945 Japanese surrender ceremony.
MacArthur signed the Instrument of Surrender as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers. He was followed by representatives for the United States, China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand—nine representatives in all.
The American representative was Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. The other signatories included General Hsu Yung-chang for China, Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser for the United Kingdom, Lieutenant General Kuzma Derevyanko for the Soviet Union, and representatives of five additional Allied countries.
Counting can be confusing because MacArthur signed before these nine representatives, while Japan’s two principal signatories signed earlier. The total of nine therefore refers specifically to the Allied representatives who followed MacArthur, not to every person present on the ship or every delegation attending the ceremony.
