How many Allied nations were represented by signatories at Japan’s surrender ceremony?

The story behind the answer

Nine Allied nations were represented by signatories at Japan’s surrender ceremony.

The nations were the United States, China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. Their representatives signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.

Douglas MacArthur signed first as Supreme Commander for the Allied powers, and Chester Nimitz signed for the United States. The other national representatives followed in a prescribed order, reflecting the coalition that had fought Japan.

The total can be confused because MacArthur’s signature is sometimes counted separately from the national representatives. The document therefore involved MacArthur plus representatives of nine Allied nations. Japan’s delegation included Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijiro Umezu.
