How many Allied governments were represented by signatories at Japan's 1945 surrender ceremony?

The story behind the answer

Nine Allied governments were represented by signatories at Japan's 1945 surrender ceremony.

The governments represented were the United States, China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. General Douglas MacArthur signed for the Allied powers, and the representatives of these nine governments signed after him in a prescribed order.

Chester Nimitz signed for the United States. The other national representatives included General Hsu Yung-chang for China, Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser for the United Kingdom, Lieutenant General Kuzma Derevyanko for the Soviet Union, and senior officers from the other five Allied countries.

The number is sometimes misstated as eight because MacArthur's signature is counted separately from the national representatives, or because lists omit one of the smaller Allied delegations. The document itself included a broad coalition that had fought Japan across the Asia-Pacific region and in Europe.
