How many Allied governments signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender?

The story behind the answer

Nine Allied governments signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender.

The governments represented were the United States, China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. Their representatives signed aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945.

General Douglas MacArthur signed first for the Allied powers in his role as Supreme Commander. Admiral Chester Nimitz then signed for the United States, and the other Allied representatives followed in a planned order.

The count refers to Allied governments, not the total number of people at the ceremony. Japan also supplied two principal signatories, Mamoru Shigemitsu and Yoshijirō Umezu, while additional Japanese officials attended as members of the delegation.
