How many Allied governments signed Japan's surrender document at the September 2, 1945 ceremony?

The story behind the answer

Nine Allied governments signed Japan’s surrender document at the September 2, 1945 ceremony.

After General Douglas MacArthur signed as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, representatives signed for the United States, China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. These nine governments formed the Allied signatory group.

The ceremony therefore included more than the best-known American and Japanese figures. Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz signed for the United States, while General Hsu Yung-chang represented China and Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser represented the United Kingdom. Other signatories represented the remaining Allied governments.

The Japanese delegation itself included eleven representatives, but only Mamoru Shigemitsu and Yoshijirō Umezu signed the document. This distinction explains why counts of participants can differ from the number of governments that formally signed.
