How long is the Statue of Liberty's index finger?

The story behind the answer

The Statue of Liberty's index finger is 8 feet long. More precisely, the measurement is about 8 feet 1 inch, or 2.44 meters—roughly the height of a tall person.

That outsized finger is part of the statue's remarkable scale. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed Liberty Enlightening the World as a colossal figure, and Gustave Eiffel helped create the internal iron framework that supports its copper skin. The statue itself is 151 feet 1 inch tall from heel to torch.

Visitors sometimes confuse the index finger with the statue's hand, which is considerably larger: the hand is about 16 feet 5 inches high. Other frequently quoted measurements include a 4-foot-6-inch nose and a 42-foot right arm.

The statue was assembled on its pedestal in New York Harbor and dedicated on October 28, 1886. Its exaggerated proportions were necessary for the figure to remain visually legible and imposing when viewed from the harbor and at ground level.
