How long is the Great Sphinx in meters?
Answer
73 meters
Answer
73 meters
The Great Sphinx of Giza is 73 meters long. This measurement runs from the monument’s front paws to the end of its tail, giving the reclining statue an extraordinary overall length.
The Sphinx was carved directly from limestone bedrock on the Giza Plateau, rather than assembled from separate blocks like a masonry building. Its body represents a lion, while its human head depicts a pharaoh, although the identity of the ruler represented remains debated.
Its other commonly cited dimensions are about 20 meters high and 19 meters wide at the rear haunches. Because portions of the monument have been restored and its base is irregular, measurements may be rounded slightly in different references.
The Sphinx is also famous for its missing nose. Contrary to a popular story, Napoleon’s soldiers did not destroy it; drawings made before Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign already show the nose missing.
