How long is a half when playing a game of rugby?

The story behind the answer

A half in a standard rugby match lasts 40 minutes.

That produces 80 minutes of regulation playing time, divided into two halves. Teams change ends at halftime, and the interval is normally no longer than 15 minutes in rugby union. The same 40-minute-half structure is also used in rugby league, which is why the answer applies broadly when a quiz simply says “rugby.”

The clock does not always stop at exactly 40 minutes. In rugby union, if the ball remains in play when time expires, play can continue until the next stoppage. A penalty or free-kick awarded before the end of the half can also extend the action under the laws of the game. This is different from sports where the final whistle sounds immediately when the clock reaches zero.

The length of a half is one reason rugby differs from some football codes and indoor variations. Youth competitions, sevens rugby, and other modified formats use shorter periods. Rugby sevens, for example, normally has two seven-minute halves, so the 40-minute answer belongs to the traditional full-field game rather than every rugby format.
