How long does JWST take to see the entire sky?

JWST takes about six months to see almost the entire sky. Its changing viewing geometry lets the telescope gradually access directions that are initially hidden by its Sun-avoidance limits.

Webb’s sunshield must always face the Sun, Earth, and Moon so the observatory’s mirrors and infrared instruments stay cold. That requirement restricts the telescope to a roughly 40-percent field of regard at any one time. As Webb travels around the Sun with Earth, the sky directions that satisfy those constraints change throughout the year.

After approximately half an orbit, the accessible region has shifted enough for Webb to point toward nearly every part of the celestial sphere. “See” here means “have the ability to point at,” not that Webb continuously scans every star or galaxy. Each target still requires a planned observation, and some objects may be observable only during particular windows.

The six-month cycle also affects observing programs. Astronomers schedule time-sensitive targets around visibility periods, while objects near the ecliptic or close to the Sun can have especially restrictive windows. Webb’s orbit near the Sun–Earth L2 point helps maintain the stable thermal geometry needed for this repeating coverage.
