How long does Basel Carnival last?
Answer
72 hours
Answer
72 hours
Basel Carnival lasts exactly 72 hours. It begins at 4:00 am on Monday after Ash Wednesday with Morgestraich and ends at 4:00 am on Thursday with the carnival’s closing rituals.
That duration explains Basel’s local nickname for Fasnacht: “the three most beautiful days.” During the 72-hour stretch, masked and costumed participants fill the old town, while restaurants and bars remain central gathering places. Traditional foods include flour soup, onion tart and cheese tart.
The festival follows a precise clock rather than a loose estimate of three days. The opening darkness, lantern processions, marching cliques and later Guggenmusik events all fit inside that fixed period. On Tuesday, families and children have their own celebrations, while Gugge concerts become a major evening attraction.
The exact timing can produce unusual footnotes. In 2002, the streetlights were switched off at 3:59 am because of an error, but the carnival still continued until the scheduled Thursday closing time. That made the event one minute longer than usual.
