How long did the Wright brothers’ 1905 Flyer remain airborne during its longest 1905 flight?

The story behind the answer

The Wright brothers’ 1905 Flyer remained airborne for 39 minutes 23 seconds during its longest recorded flight in 1905. The flight took place at Huffman Prairie near Dayton, Ohio, on October 5, 1905, with Wilbur Wright piloting.

The 1905 aircraft, commonly called Flyer III, was a major improvement over the fragile 1903 machine. It had a more effective elevator and rudder arrangement, stronger structural components, and a redesigned control system that made sustained circling possible.

Wilbur’s flight covered about 24 miles and demonstrated that the brothers had moved beyond brief experimental hops. They could now take off, fly controlled circuits, and land without rebuilding the aircraft after every attempt.

The 1905 Flyer is often regarded as the first practical airplane. The Wrights did not immediately attract broad public attention, however, because they made relatively few public demonstrations before beginning negotiations with potential military and commercial customers.
