How long did the French siege of Puebla last when French forces captured the city in 1863?

The story behind the answer

The French siege of Puebla lasted 62 days before French forces captured the city in 1863.

After Mexico’s victory at Puebla in May 1862, France sent a larger force and renewed its campaign the following year. The second siege began in March 1863, when French troops surrounded Puebla and cut the defenders off from outside support.

Mexican forces held out for more than two months, but shortages of food and ammunition eventually made continued resistance impossible. General Jesús González Ortega surrendered the city on May 17, 1863. The fall of Puebla opened the route toward Mexico City, which French forces captured soon afterward.

This siege is distinct from the battle celebrated by Cinco de Mayo. Mexico won the 1862 battle, but France eventually overcame Puebla during the much longer 1863 campaign.
