How long did NASA’s Gemini 4 mission remain in space?

The story behind the answer

NASA’s Gemini 4 mission remained in space for four days.

Gemini 4 launched on 3 June 1965 and splashed down on 7 June, completing a flight lasting 97 hours and 56 minutes. James McDivitt commanded the mission, while Ed White served as pilot and performed the first American spacewalk during the flight.

The mission’s duration was important because NASA needed to learn whether astronauts could work effectively in space for periods approaching the length of a lunar mission. Gemini 4 also tested long-duration operations, guidance, communications, and scientific observations of Earth.

The flight did not last exactly four full calendar days in the simple everyday sense; its precise elapsed time was just under 98 hours. Gemini 7 later set a much longer crewed-flight endurance record of nearly two weeks, so Gemini 4 was an intermediate step rather than the program’s final duration achievement.
