How high is Mount Everest above sea level according to the 2020 Nepal–China measurement?

The story behind the answer

Mount Everest is 8,848.86 metres above sea level according to the 2020 Nepal–China measurement.

The height refers to the mountain's snow and ice summit elevation. Nepal and China announced the jointly measured figure in December 2020, replacing commonly cited older values such as 8,848 metres. Survey teams used satellite positioning and other geodetic methods to determine the updated elevation.

Everest lies in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and Tibet, an autonomous region of China. Nepal calls it Sagarmatha, while Tibetans call it Chomolungma. The mountain is part of the Mahalangur Himal sub-range.

The first confirmed ascent reached the summit on 29 May 1953, when New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay climbed via the South Col route. Height measurements can vary slightly depending on whether summit snow and ice are included, which explains older figures seen in books and quizzes.
