How does the 2026 Perseid meteor shower list classify Perseid meteors by brightness?

The story behind the answer

The 2026 Perseid meteor shower list classifies Perseid meteors as bright.

This category describes the typical visual character of the shower’s meteors in the list, not a guarantee that every individual meteor will be conspicuous. Meteor brightness varies with particle size, composition, entry angle, speed, and the darkness of the observing site.

Perseid meteors are well known for being fast and often leaving luminous trails. The shower’s parent comet, 109P/Swift–Tuttle, releases dust and rocky particles along its orbit; Earth passes through this stream each year, producing the visible display.

“Bright” is also distinct from the shower’s ZHR, or zenithal hourly rate. ZHR estimates an idealized hourly meteor rate under dark skies, while the brightness label summarizes the appearance of the meteors themselves.
