House M.D.'s Gregory House is loosely modeled on which famous fictional detective?

The story behind the answer

Gregory House is loosely modeled on Sherlock Holmes, the fictional detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle.

The connection appears in several parts of House M.D. House solves medical mysteries through observation, deduction, and the elimination of unlikely explanations, much as Holmes solves criminal cases. Both characters are highly intelligent, socially abrasive, and willing to pursue a theory through unconventional methods.

The parallel is also visible in names and relationships. “House” resembles “Holmes,” and House's closest friend, James Wilson, occupies a role comparable to Dr. John Watson. The show's creators have acknowledged the Holmes influence while developing House as an original physician rather than a direct adaptation.

House's drug dependence, violin playing, and consulting-detective-like approach further reinforce the comparison, although these traits are adapted for a medical setting. Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, and Philip Marlowe are different fictional detectives and are not the principal model for House.
